Workpod 9: collective imagination

Maui House of Worship
Design Proposal 2001

Hono Hu'aka, or Valley of the Rainbow and Healing Waters, is a place where one can directly experience the beauty and sacredness of nature. The site in Huelo is nestled in a sheltered cove at the edge of a 300-foot cliff that overlooks Waipio Bay on Maui’s lush and rugged north shore. Here, Hono Hu’aka Tropical Plantation will be a place for prayer and meditation surrounded by nature.

The program called for designing a Bahá’í House of Worship, traditionally a nine-sided structure with a dome. We proposed a “kit-of-parts” that can be transported and then assembled on-site which eases the challenges of access to this remote site on a ridge at the center of the property.
